What do all those extra markings on my tape measure mean?

Most tape measures have more than just inches and feet. You’ll often see red numbers every 16 inches (for standard wall stud spacing) and sometimes black diamonds every 19.2 inches (for truss or joist spacing).

Some tapes also have metric markings, fractions, or special notations to make layout work faster and more accurate. If you’re ever unsure, check the legend on the tape or the manufacturer’s info. Those extra marks are there to save you time.

What’s “standout” and why does it matter?

Standout is how far you can extend the tape before it collapses or bends. If you’re measuring by yourself across a room or up a wall, a longer standout makes life a lot easier.

Pro tip: If you’re working solo, look for a tape with a standout of at least 8 feet for most jobs.

Why does the hook on the end of my tape measure move?

That’s not a defect, it’s a feature!

The hook is designed to slide in and out by the thickness of the hook itself. This way, your measurements stay accurate whether you’re hooking onto the edge of a board or pushing up against a wall. Always start your measurement from zero and let the hook do its thing.

Can I use my tape measure for inside and outside measurements?

Absolutely. For outside measurements, hook the end over the edge of what you’re measuring.

For inside measurements (like between two walls), butt the tape case against one wall and read the measurement at the other. Many tapes have the length of the case printed right on them, so you can add that length to your reading for a true inside measurement.
